It's only fair to share the downside of visiting Hawaii, so you know what you are getting yourself into. The good thing is... there aren't that many, and they're not that bad.
Reason 1 to Not Visit Hawaii: Hawaii’s Beaches
Although there are many ways to relax and enjoy your holiday away from the beach in Hawaii - including hotel pools - the beaches really are one of the best parts. So if you don’t like the beach… you probably won’t like Hawaii.
Reason 2 to Not Visit Hawaii: Hawaii’s Tourists
On any given day there are hundreds of flights into Hawaii bringing in thousands of visitors. This is quite amazing considering the actual population of Hawaii is just over one million. Although there are secluded and even suburban areas on each of the islands, the Islands aren’t real big, so tourists may pop their head up in even the most seemingly hidden locations.
Reason 3 to Not Visit Hawaii: Hawaii’s Food
The quality of food in Hawaii can often be sacrificed for quantity. Also during peak seasons you can wait in line for hours for the more popular restaurants in the bigger tourist areas – yes, hours. Watch out for overpriced restaurants, and the places that catch your eye from the outside, aren’t always the best on the inside. As always...watch where locals go and you’ll find some hidden gems.
Reason 4 to Not Visit Hawaii: Hawaii’s People
Part of the uniqueness of this melting pot of cultures is the closeness of the community, but this also means they are wary of outsiders. And many of those of true Hawaiian ancestry still fighting for annexation from the US, don’t like the masses of tourists who come to the islands.
Reason 5 to Not Visit Hawaii: Hawaii’s Traffic
There are literally two cars for every person on the Islands. Cars are a priority for many Locals, and they take pride in them. This, plus the lack of public transport, means that roads are always busy and peak hour is pretty much all day.
Reason 6 to Not Visit Hawaii: Hawaiian Time
"Hawaiian Time" is supposed to be a joke about the laid-back nature of people in Hawaii, but like many jokes, there is some truth to it... and after the first few times, it's not that funny. If you require something done in a hurry, or done on time, forget about doing it in Hawaii. And the further away from the tourist areas you get, the slower things will be.
Reason 7 to Not Visit Hawaii: Hawaii’s Shopping
If you don’t like shopping, be very careful when planning your trip to Hawaii - there are opportunities to spend your money, on worthwhile and meaningless items, everywhere.
Reason 8 to Not Visit Hawaii: Hawaii’s Tack-factor
Re-think your trip if you don’t like: bright-coloured floral print (on anything), Elvis, ukelele music from the 70s, actually anything from the 70s, overpriced pearls, overpriced anything or just about any other tacky, tourist-oriented item you've heard of or seen before. You can avert your eyes to most of these things, but they are everywhere.
Reason 9 to Not Visit Hawaii: Pastel Colours
For the most part, buildings in Hawaii have not been updated or renovated since they were built. As most building went on during the Elvis-era, this makes for some old-fashioned and often out-of-date surroundings. They have added a lot of landscaping features in areas like Waikiki, but for the most part you will think you are in an episode of Hawaii 5-0, the original series.Reason 10 to Not Visit Hawaii: Like it, or leave it
There is no 10th reason...the truth is, you can find something wrong with every destination, whether on vacation or to live, and Hawaii has plenty of things you, or I, could point out that are wrong (and some I will in later posts) but for everything that is wrong with Hawaii, there are twice as many things that are right.
